Crocker Ranger National Park

Crocker Range National Park

Established in 1984, Crocker Range National Park spans an impressive 139,919 hectares, making it the largest park in Sabah. It is not only gazetted as a national park, but also recognised internationally as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

With its remarkable diversity of rare and endemic plant and wildlife species—from lush lowland tropical forests to cooler montane forests—the park is truly a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Birdwatchers will be delighted to know that the park is a premium birding destination, home to a variety of unique and magnificent species such as Asian paradise flycatchers, buff-rumped woodpeckers, bulbuls, hornbills, Pacific swallows, and chestnut munia.

For adventure seekers, the Padas River, which flows through the park, offers one of the best white water rafting experiences in Borneo, attracting thrill-seekers from around the region.

Hiking enthusiasts can embark on the legendary Salt Trail, a 34-kilometre jungle trek that begins at Inobong and ends at Tikolod. Traditionally used by village traders, this route promises a rewarding wilderness adventure with rugged terrain, muddy river valleys, and glimpses of village life along the way.

At the Park Headquarters, visitors can explore the Insectarium, which showcases over 400 species of insects, including stick insects, leaf insects, rhinoceros beetles, and stag beetles.

Nature lovers can also stroll through the Fern Garden, home to approximately 55 species of ferns, and witness the iconic Rafflesia in its natural habitat at the dedicated Rafflesia Plot, which focuses on conservation of these rare blooms.

Overnight stays are available within the park, with options including dormitories, a rest house, and campsites. Guided night jungle walks can also be arranged with prior approval from park rangers.

The best time to visit is between May and late September or early October. Visitors are advised to avoid the monsoon season from October to January or February.
