Appreciate the Nation’s Unique Biodiversity This Malaysia Day: Flora Edition

This Malaysia Day, let’s take a moment to celebrate one of our greatest national treasures — Malaysia’s extraordinary biodiversity. Did you know that Malaysia is one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world?

Nearly two-thirds of our land is covered by forests, providing shelter to:

  • Around 20% of the world’s animal species
  • Over 15,000 species of vascular plants
  • More than 2,000 tree species
  • An astonishing 3,000 orchid species, with more still waiting to be discovered

While it’s impossible to showcase them all, let’s get to know three remarkable plants that highlight the richness of Malaysia’s flora. Get ready for more “Did you know?” moments.

🌺 1. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (Bunga Raya)

Malaysia’s national flower, the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, or Bunga Raya, symbolises unity, strength, and national pride. The name Bunga Raya translates to “celebratory flower”, reflecting its importance in Malaysian identity.

Each of its five petals represents the five principles of the Rukun Negara, while its vibrant red hue symbolises courage, resilience, and the spirited nature of Malaysians. The Bunga Raya is also prominently featured on Malaysian Ringgit banknotes and coins.

🌸 2. Rafflesia

One of Malaysia’s most fascinating botanical wonders, the Rafflesia produces the largest flower bloom in the world — growing over one metre in diameter, roughly the size of a coffee table.

Despite its striking appearance, the flower emits a strong odour similar to rotting flesh, earning it the nickname “corpse flower”. One notable species, Rafflesia keithii, is endemic to Sabah.

A recently discovered species in Pulau Tioman, Pahang, reminds us that Malaysia’s forests still hold many secrets.

🌼 3. Orchids

Orchids are among the largest families of flowering plants, with over 28,000 species worldwide. Malaysia alone is home to more than 3,000 orchid species.

Fun fact: Vanilla, the second-most expensive spice in the world, comes from an orchid! In Temerloh, Pahang, visitors can explore Amani Vanilla, where vanilla orchids are cultivated and transformed into delicious treats.
