Raya in the City: Festive Markets, Late-Night Shopping & Family Traditions

As Hari Raya approaches in Malaysia, cities begin to transform with festive lights, decorations and lively crowds preparing for the celebration. Streets and shopping areas become vibrant with people shopping for festive outfits, traditional cookies and home decorations. The excitement builds day by day, especially in Kuala Lumpur, where some of the most famous Raya shopping spots attract visitors from across the city.

One of the most iconic places for Raya preparations is Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, often simply called Jalan TAR by locals. During the weeks leading up to Hari Raya, the long stretch of road becomes a bustling marketplace filled with temporary stalls and street vendors. Shoppers browse through racks of colourful baju kurung, baju Melayu and traditional fabrics, while others search for festive accessories, scarves and handbags. The lively atmosphere continues late into the night as families and young shoppers hunt for the perfect Raya outfit.

Just a short walk away is the vibrant Masjid India Street Market, a popular shopping district known for its rows of small shops and textile stores. Here, visitors can find everything from embroidered fabrics and traditional garments to festive decorations and gifts. The streets are filled with bright lights, cheerful chatter and the scent of street food from nearby vendors, making it a favourite stop for those looking to soak in the festive mood.

Across Kuala Lumpur, many of these Raya bazaars and shopping streets stay open until late at night, especially in the final days before the celebration. It is common to see people doing last-minute shopping even on the night before Hari Raya, as families prepare their homes and gather everything needed for the festive day.

For those who prefer a more comfortable indoor shopping experience, several major malls also host large festive markets and special Raya events. One of the newest hotspots is The Exchange TRX, a modern lifestyle destination in the heart of Kuala Lumpur that often features festive pop-up markets, fashion showcases and special Raya promotions during the season. Shoppers can find everything from stylish baju raya collections to festive gifts, cookies and home decorations all under one roof.

Another popular event at TRX is RIUH Raya Baik Baik, a lively festive bazaar that celebrates local creativity and brands. The event features more than 110 local brands, covering everything from fashion to Raya preparations. Visitors can explore a vibrant marketplace that includes 73 retail brands and 30 food and beverage vendors, offering a wide selection of Raya outfits, accessories, gifts, home items and festive treats.

Beyond shopping, the bazaar also offers a festive cultural experience with 25 live performances and 20 workshops and creative activities, making it a lively space for families and friends to gather. Most of the retail brands focus on fashion, accessories, daily essentials, Raya gifts and home décor, making it a perfect stop for those looking to complete their Hari Raya preparations while enjoying the energetic festive atmosphere.

The excitement reaches its peak on Malam Raya, the night before Hari Raya. After the final preparations are completed, neighbourhoods come alive with laughter and celebration. Children and adults gather outside their homes to light bunga api (sparklers) and small fireworks, filling the night with colourful sparks and cheerful sounds. Families and neighbours often join in together, creating a lively and joyful atmosphere as everyone welcomes the arrival of the festive morning.
