Klang Heritage Walk: Discover the Historic Heart & Soul of Selangor

Often described as the heart and soul of Selangor, Klang is a town rich in stories, traditions, and architectural treasures. Long before Kuala Lumpur rose to prominence, Klang was already a thriving settlement — once serving as the royal capital of Selangor and an important centre for tin mining and trade.

A walk through Klang today reveals colonial-era buildings, royal landmarks, places of worship, and cultural streets that reflect the town’s multicultural past. This heritage walk invites visitors to slow down and experience the layers of history that shaped Klang into what it is today.

About Klang

One of the oldest territories in Selangor, Klang began as a settlement along the southern bank of the Klang River. As early as the 15th century, the town was known for its tin-mining industry. Prior to the establishment of Kuala Lumpur, Klang held the prestigious role of being the royal capital of Selangor.

Much of the town’s heritage dates back to the late 1800s and early 1900s during British colonial administration. Klang also became a melting pot for diverse communities — a legacy still visible today in its architecture, food, and cultural spaces.

The Royal Gallery (Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz)

Established in 1988 by the late Yang di-Pertuan Agong XI, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, the Royal Gallery offers an intimate look into Selangor’s royal heritage. Designed by British architect A. B. Hubback, the building originally functioned as a British land and administration office and later served as a wartime headquarters during the Japanese occupation.

Chennai Silk (Former Chartered Bank Building)

Once known as the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, this Neo-Classical building from the 1800s was Klang’s first financial institution. Today, it houses Chennai Silk, one of the Klang Valley’s most renowned saree boutiques.
