Located approximately 200 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre sits within the lush Krau Wildlife Reserve in Pahang. Established in 1989 under the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), the centre is operated by the Elephant Capture and Translocation Unit and plays a vital role in Malaysia’s elephant conservation efforts.
The centre functions primarily as a translocation and rehabilitation facility for orphaned, injured, or displaced elephants — particularly those found wandering into human settlements. To date, more than 400 wild elephants have been successfully relocated and released into protected areas such as Taman Negara (National Park). Beyond rehabilitation, the centre is also dedicated to public education and conservation awareness, highlighting the importance of protecting Malaysia’s endangered elephants.
Visiting the Centre
The Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre is open daily from 10:30 AM to around 4:00 PM and is closed on major public holidays. Each visit begins with an educational video presentation, offering visitors valuable insight into the centre’s conservation work and the challenging field operations carried out by rangers during elephant rescue and translocation missions.
Following the presentation, visitors have the opportunity to observe and interact with the elephants at close range. Feeding sessions are a highlight, while bathing activities in the nearby river may also take place — weather and water levels permitting.
