The state of Melaka is widely known for its rich heritage and vibrant culture. Within the city, many historical buildings have been restored with the intention to reflect its roots and educate the public on the history of Melaka. With influences from multiple countries, Melaka’s culture is definitely one of the most interesting to study.
Certified as one of the World Heritage Sites in Malaysia by UNESCO, Melaka is also fondly regarded as the place where it all began for Malaysia. Holding so much history, including the first state in Malaysia to be conquered by the Dutch, British, Portuguese and Japanese, Melaka still showcases heritage buildings and sites that are well-preserved to this date for all to witness. There are 21 museums in Melaka under the care of the Melaka Museum Corporation (PERZIM). Needless to say, museums in Melaka are historical gems that showcase ancient artefacts, visual graphics and much more that provide an interactive experience for visitors today.
1. Baba & Nyonya Heritage
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum highlights the lives and culture of the Peranakan community. Once home to Baba Chan Cheng Siew, the museum spans three terrace houses, featuring lavish Blackwood furniture and interiors influenced by Dutch, Portuguese, Malay, and colonial designs. Explore the reception hall (Thia Besar) and upstairs rooms that reflect traditional Peranakan décor.

2. Maritime Museum of Melaka
A highlight is the spectacular replica of the Portuguese ship, Flor de la Mar, which sank in 1512. The museum spans three floors and showcases Melaka’s maritime history, from trade routes and naval battles to seafaring life and colonial influences.

3. Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum
Located at St. Paul’s Hill, this replica of Sultan Mansur’s royal palace showcases traditional Malay architecture with multi-tiered roofs and intricate carvings. Inside, visitors can explore eight chambers featuring royal artefacts, weaponry, musical instruments, and traditional costumes.

4. Submarine Museum
Explore life aboard the Agosta 70-class submarine, once a French-built training vessel for Malaysian marine soldiers. Visitors can tour cramped quarters, machinery, and nearby displays, including a fighter jet. Horseback riding is also available in the area.

5. Villa Sentosa (Kampung Morten)
A private museum in Kampung Morten, Villa Sentosa preserves the traditional lifestyle of the Malay community. Visitors can admire 19th-century houses and a collection of artefacts, including Ming dynasty ceramics.

6. Cheng Ho Cultural Museum
Dedicated to Chinese admiral Cheng Ho, this museum recounts his voyages to Melaka. Highlights include miniature ship models, crockery from the Ming dynasty, and insights into Chinese culture and Cheng Ho’s lineage.

7. History and Ethnography Museum
